Projects
As we forge our way into the future so we find ourselves looking to the past. Our projects reflect and represent our history and a sense of who we are and where we came from.
The Bronze Age Holy Well.
For fifty years the Bronze Age Holy well lay hidden and abandoned under a tangled web of brambles at the edge of the cliffs. No one even knew where it was. It was a piece of history lost in time. Local resident, Graham Roberts went in search and, with the help of volunteers, thought he'd found it. Not so. In fact, it took three attempts before the actual well was finally located and identified!
Since then volunteers have cleared the site of the thick, choking brambles and hogweed, and with the help of the Local Heritage Initiative, have constructed a granite stile to give access to the well and demolished the ugly 1950's concrete pump house that was near the site. Next we will erect two wooden signs, one on the coastal path and one in the village so that what was once lost is now easily found.
The site was re-opened in November 2002.
The Bronze Age Holy Well Pamphlet.
Local historian, Cheryl Straffon, researched the history of the Holy Well and provided the text to our pamphlet. . The pamphlet offers a fascinating insight into the history of the well. Did you know the well provided water for the entire village up until the 1960's? The pamphlet is available in local libraries and here at the Schoolhouse( being reprinted), or go to the holy well page to find out the full history of the well.
