Artist's Statement 2008

Whilst studying for a diploma in Art & Creativity in New Zealand, I began creating flowing abstract forms the beautiful native woods washed up on the beach by my house.

I wanted to provide a tactile experience for the 'viewer' - people like to explore objects using the sense of touch - the polished surface of wood especially so. Therefore my labels always say 'Please Touch!', rather than the opposite - a pleasure usually denied to people in most galleries.

The work presented in this exhibition is based on the human form, where the grain, texture, and the 'spalting' process all add to a piece's individuality. It means each of my sculptures is unique and irreproducible.
