COASTAL MARGINS – West Penwith and beyond

An exhibition of paintings, stitched textiles and collages
by Wendy Hermelin and Cathy Ensor

We are both strongly influenced by the natural world, in particular the Cornish coast and the life associated with it, be it bird life or human activity. Other inspiration comes from travel further afield.

Stitched textiles have featured throughout my life as a way of expressing my experience of the natural world.

I am fascinated by the continuous movement of the sea, the ever-changing relationship of hills and valleys as one walks through them and the way the colour shifts as the weather changes.

Movement and dance, which I have taught since college days, strongly influence my work as I attempt to capture a sense of movement in my pieces with colour, texture, stitching - both hand and machine - and manipulation of a variety of fabrics.

I am a member of the Textile Forum South West and have exhibited with them in the Falmouth and Salisbury Arts Centres. Other exhibitions include the Octagon Gallery Arts Centre, Yeovil, the annual Beaminster Festival, West Dorset, the Meeting House Arts Centre Ilminster Somerset and Dorset Art Weeks.
